Not my fave book from the author. Too many coincidences...
By V. Rundell of V's Reads
This book has a warning that indicates child kidnapping, child molestation and child sexual slavery are parts of the plot. Heed that warning.
Caleb and March are two gay men, Caleb is out, March, not. They are in their mid-to-late-20s and have each survived some horrors. As a result, March wants to live each day to the fullest, while Caleb is cautious.
They meet when Caleb falls through a crevasse into an ocean cave and March defies his superior to dive into the tumultuous waves and rescue him. That's the middle of this story.
Before that we learn that Caleb isn't who he claims to be, and won't appreciate anyone learning about the 12 years he spent locked in a madman's world, a slave to all his carnal desires. He surely won't tell you about the Saudi prince who bid for his services, and later saved him from his servitude. March doesn't want to tell you about his friend, the one boy he thinks he loved, who was kidnapped and killed because of March's youthful folly. He also doesn't want to talk about his jilted fiance who had a breakdown when he called off the wedding, because he couldn't imagine marrying a woman when he knew he secretly craved men.
This book has some interesting psychological issues and some seriously dark themes, but I thought it was far too convenient that March and Caleb would find each other and heal old wounds. I found Caleb to be contradictory in his actions. He's afraid a psycho is after him, and perhaps injuring/killing his lovers, sooooo he finds a boyfriend. ?!?
March is a closeted man, who's never had a male lover, soooo he takes his down-low boyfriend to his college campus for a visit and recreational sports. Hmmmm. O.o
Okay.
In any case, I was blatantly terrified of the sexual slavery aspect of the plot, and I found many bits to be downright harrowing. There was a lot of suspense, and hope, and coincidences. Some of these things I liked more than others. *side eyes the coincidences* That said, it wasn't as graphic as I'd expected going in, and I didn't mind the disjointed POV and timeline, understanding direct revelation would have cut the suspense too much.
I received a review copy via NetGalley.

Very good

This was a very tough read in parts but I ultimately liked it a lot. It's going to be hard to talk about some of it without spoilers, but I'll try. At the beginning of the story, there are Caleb and March, and Tye and Baxter. There are switching POV's, and brief flashbacks, which were kind of difficult to grasp completely, as they were in short sections at the beginning of each chapter. Everything is revealed very slowly and though you know all four characters are connected, it takes some time to figure out exactly how. There's also the anticipation and suspense in the present, which is the case in a couple of different ways. I was anxiously reading, as quickly as I could, waiting to find out what would happen.
Okay, so that sounded utterly confusing. Anyway, the character I had the most issues with was Caleb. Some of the things that happened were rather hard to believe, and Jasim's character was nearly impossible to believe. Stuff happened too quickly and too easily to seem realistic for the circumstances. Marsh's character and motivations were more easily understood and more believable. Jasim, I pretty much hated, in spite of the help he gave.
It was very suspenseful, though, and much of it was not easily figured out. I liked that as I enjoy being kept guessing. I have enjoyed many of Barbara Ellsborg's stories. This won't be my very favorite, as the subject was quite disturbing. There was not a lot that was grapically described, but imagining it was almost worse. It did have a hopeful and satisfying epilogue. This will stay on my reread list.
