The Real Mary Kelly: A Review

I purchased the book thinking it was a biography of Mary Kelly, the fifth and final “canonical” victim of Jack the Ripper. I was a little disappointed to learn that the book primarily develops the case for yet another identification of Jack the Ripper in an already very long list of viable suspects. To my delight the author does provide biographical detail of Mary Kelly but only if you accept his theory of who the real Mary Kelly was. If the author is correct in his assertion, then he is a direct decedent of the person he believes to be the real Mary Kelly. I won’t say who he believes Mary Kelly really was or who he believes killed her. I will say that the author’s theory is as good as any other, in my opinion, but it is not his theory that makes this book worth recommending. I am recommending it first and foremost because it is exceptionally well written. It is a compelling read regardless of your final agreement or disagreement with the author’s conclusions. Once you pick this book up you will not want to put it down. It is that good. I am a “Ripperologist” only incidentally as my real affection is for Victorian studies. I have read dozens of Ripper books because the Ripper is such an important part of Victorian history. Each Ripper book presents passionately, almost dogmatically, the case for a different suspect, each author is convinced that he or she has finally “solved” the case. For me, the identity of the Ripper remains a mystery. The other reason to read this book is that it provides valuable insight into Victorian culture. So if you are looking for a really good read or if you want to learn more about the wonderful age of the Victorians, read this book. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I was delighted. Thank you Wynne Weston-Davies on a job well done.

supported here and there as best he was able

Mr Davies has done quite well to substantiate his case with this book. His case is well stated in narrative, admittedly hypothetical, supported here and there as best he was able. It is by no means perfect. He is not a professional writer - I was however left with the impression that the author was earnestly trying to unravel the mystery, not just trying to make a few bucks.

Hopefully he will go through with his plan to excavate the remains of Mary Kelly. A positive genetic match would bolster the identification of his tentative suspect and give an identity to the unknown woman... Not doing so would display a lack of conviction.

It is my opinion that this book is speculation at best and a complete waste of money

After reading this book, I was terribly disappointed and I felt ripped off. It is my opinion that the author makes a series of wild logical jumps to reach an unsound conclusion supported by little more than the author's own conjecture and not properly supported by historical fact.

I was unaware of Frank Richard Stockton until I encountered him in a short story anthology. What a delight. He writes with whimsey and creates wonderful characters and worlds for them to inhabit. Almost fairy tales for adiults. Bedtime stories you'll love.

Very Disappointing to a diy naturally fan.....

I read the reviews but wanted to give this book a try because I love the website. However, the reviews were right. The book is more of a handbook, it's about the size of a brochure book and all the recipes are what I get in the newsletters and online. Why buy the book for $15 when you can get everything on the website for free?
The book does have some space in the back to write your own recipes and notes but I can go to a store and buy a notebook for $1.00 for me to write notes in it.

I am very disappointed in this book and wish I could return it because it definitely is not what I thought it would be. Unless you just want the book and not look on the website, then this is for you. But if you are looking for actual recipes and want a good book, look elsewhere. Very, very, very disappointing.

Immer, wenn Leonie von Ten­hagen offiziell von ihrer Tante zum Tee gebeten wurde, gab es etwas zu besprechen. Das war im Grunde genommen so lächerlich. Sie wohnten in einem Haus. Leonie hatte die meiste Zeit ihres Lebens in der Villa Rosenstein verbracht, sah man einmal von den sechs Jahren ab, die sie mit Robert verheiratet gewesen war. Da hatten sie gemeinsam in einem wunderschönen Penthouse gelebt, und das wäre heute noch so, hätte es nicht diesen schrecklichen Unfalltod gegeben. Robert war von einem Geisterfahrer absichtlich mit in den Tod gerissen worden. Der Schmerz, ihn verloren zu haben, würde wohl niemals vergehen, auch wenn sie sich bemühte, ein normales Leben zu führen. Doch was war schon normal? Dass man nicht ständig weinte? Dass die Zeit alle Wunden heilte? Irgendwann hatte Leonie aufgehört, darüber nachzudenken. Und seit sie, mit recht beachtlichem Erfolg, Kriminalromane schrieb, wurde sie abgelenkt.
